Service Network: Sustainability

11 February 2010

11/02/10 Tomorrow’s World: Sustainability for the Service Sector

Cost: £30.00

Sustainability is fast becoming a business “must”. Doing nothing is no longer an option but in the service sector it can be difficult to make major changes to increase the sustainability of your company and have an impact on your bottom line, whilst staying focused on your core business activities.

Compared to manufacturing companies, the service industry has little emissions to reduce, packaging to minimise or waste to dispose of. So how can you go about making your business ‘green’ and what business benefits can this bring?

In this insightful morning event our first expert, Gareth Kane, will address the business case for sustainability in the service sector, explain how to approach sustainability properly and provide plenty of practical hints and tips for you to take away and implement in your business.

Gareth has spent 12 years delivering sustainability projects. In 2008, The Journal named Gareth a ‘Rising Star, Future Leader’ for his work on tackling climate change. He has appeared on the BBC Six O’Clock News, Countryfile, The Politics Show and local radio. His first book, The Three Secrets of Green Business, was published in 2009.

Graeme Mills of GPM Network will then follow on from Gareth and explain how adopting a sustainable approach to your business can generate new customers and build brand loyalty. Using examples from Dell Computers to Virgin, Graeme will demonstrate the pitfalls and opportunities for businesses who communicate a sustainable message to their customers, staff and shareholders.

He will outline several checks that need to be made in developing effective communication in this area and this includes ensuring your claims are genuine, realistic and relevant. Get this wrong and the whole message could backfire and cynically viewed as ‘green wash’. But get it right and you could ride on the wave of a significant consumer trend that is becoming increasingly important in consumer decision making.

We will also be joined by Northern Stage and Muckle LLP who will discuss their experiences of ‘going green’.
