Service Network: Accessing the Ladder of Finance

24 March 2010

24/03/10 Following on from our popular event ‘Meet the New Boy in Town – JEREMIE’ Service Network now want to help companies prepare themselves for accessing the Finance for Business North East funds.

Cost: £30.00

Funding options for SMEs have changed substantially in the past year. As you will have seen from recent news stories, Finance for Business North East funding is the most substantial injection of venture capital funding seen in the North East economy over recent years.

How do you get a slice of the action?

There are a number of steps which you need to take to make sure that you give your business the best possible chance of obtaining investment. Fund Managers will look to invest in companies that are in good shape, have clear strategies and defined business plans.

This event will review what actions you may need to take to give your business the best possible chance of obtaining funding, including what legal issues you need to consider, what support Business Link can offer and also hear first-hand what a Fund Manager will look for.

Legal pointers

There are a number of legal issues which you will need to consider when applying for funding, and at this seminar you will hear from three speakers from Ward Hadaway who will highlight the main issues:

Katherine Hay-Heddle, Partner, Corporate Finance

  • How to get yourself prepared for funding – what you need to think about to ensure that your company is best placed to get funding
  • Terminology guide – a quick guide to things you will need to know which you may not have come across before if you have not had funding
  • What you expect from the legal documents – what is “the norm”, where can you negotiate the terms?

Alex Shiel, Partner, Head of IP/IT Team

  • IP due diligence – protecting your IP to make your business fundable
  • Ownership problems

Paul Scope, Associate, Employment Team

  • Employee due diligence - getting your house in order
  • What are the likely employment implications of funding?

Support from Business Link North East

We will then be joined by Business Link North East who will discuss the support they can give to SMEs hoping to access funds.

First hand information from a Fund Manager

Andrew Coles, Fund Manager at FW Capital, will then present on what the Fund Managers will be looking for in a potential investment company and what steps companies need to take to make themselves most attractive to investors.
