Dan Monnery is Head of Policy at Northumbria University, where he works on projects that underpin the university's strategic direction. Both research-engaged and business-focused, it is the largest research and teaching university in the North East of England, with 36,000 students from over 130 countries.
Dan has spent his career in a variety of high profile policy roles in national, regional and local organisations. Prior to joining Northumbria University, he was Head of Partnership for Newcastle and Gateshead Councils. He developed a programme of practical measures to strengthen the partnership between the two councils, especially on the economic agenda.
Between 2007 and 2010, Dan was Deputy Regional Director - Economy and Strategy at Government Office for the North East. His role focused on delivering the agenda of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in the North East and leading the office's strategic business planning.
Dan spent the previous ten years in a variety of roles at HM Treasury. As well as working as Private Secretary to the Chief Secretary (Treasury's second Cabinet Minister), he worked on legislation setting up the Financial Services Authority and establishing the London congestion charge. He also took forward the Treasury's work on science funding for universities, reforming management of the UK radio spectrum, the switchover to digital television and the establishment of a single communications regulator, Ofcom. At the Treasury, Dan undertook two external secondments. He helped develop the BBC's future plans as part of the review of its Royal Charter. He also led work at the Civil Aviation Authority on reforms to the EU frameworks for the regulation of airlines and air passengers' rights; as well as having business planning, budgetary and public relations responsibilities.
