The world of work in 20 years time...

Where will the jobs be? What will the jobs be? Will "retirement" be a thing of the past? What impact will technology have? How will an ageing population impact on future products and services?

Earlier this year the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills unveiled a list of 20 future professions in a paper entitled "The Shape of Jobs to Come". This revealed massive shifts in what the world of work might look like - from waste data handlers to body-part makers, from nano medics to vertical farmers.

Clearly, not all of the anticipated new jobs will happen in the timeframe envisaged - some might not happen at all, many will happen at a speed that we cannot even contemplate today, and indeed new roles will emerge which are not even on our horizons.

Changes in what we do and how we earn a living will be accompanied by revolutionary changes in working practices - more flexible working patterns, the end of the "commute", the march of technology, robotics replacing colleagues, and later retirement ages will all have to be considered and embraced.

But these challenges and changes will bring new opportunities too.

The economy will be truly borderless and whilst the working population may be older, they will also be wealthier, healthier, more active, trendier, and they will have the world wide web at their fingertips. This new paradigm presents endless potential.

As part of Service's Network's "Tomorrow's World" series of events, we will be exploring these new horizons to ensure that North East businesses stay ahead of the game. On 29th September 2010 we will be joined by a panel of leading international experts who will bring insight, innovation and inspiration to this debate.

Rohit Talwar, the creator and CEO of the research company who compiled "The Shape of Jobs to Come" report will be our keynote speaker. Rohit believes that in twenty years time most jobs as we know them will not exist; his thought-provoking discussion will introduce us to "tomorrow's trades".

A representative from NESTA, the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts - an independent body with a mission to make the UK more innovative - will discuss the work they are doing with people in their 50s, employers, and third sector organisations, to experiment with new and flexible work patterns and lifestyle choices that enable the over 50s to continue to contribute to the economy and society. NESTA will also talk about their recent research carried out with SAGA on retirement ages.

We will then hear from Andy Owen, Marketing Consultant, about "How to communicate effectively with mature customers".  Over 50s hold 75% of wealth in EU but are only a target for 10% of marketing spend.  This growing market provides huge opportunities and should not be ignored.
